Immigration Data
From: "The History of the Pennsylvania German Pioneers"
Anthony (listed elsewhere as Johann Anonges Branenburg) Brandenburger, age 29, a Palantine German, arrived on the ship "Samuel and Elizabeth" September 15, 1752.
William Henrich Brandenburger arrived on the ship "Two Brothers" September 15, 1752.
Jacob brandenburger arrived on the ship"Sally", November 4, 1766.
The above ships were English. The embarked from the port of Rotterdam in Holland and landed at Philadelphia harbor. Most of the passengers on board were from the Palantinato section of Germany. Since generally only he names of the adult male passengers were given, it is possible that the above men were accompanied by their families.
In the Eighteenth Century, conditions were poor in the Palatinate. In the year 1709, a large colony of Palatines mmigrated from Germany to the New World. They landed at New York and settled there in the Mohawk Valley. They discovered that conditions there were as bad, if not worse, than those they had left behind. By 1711, many had returned to Germany bringing with them tales of the privations they had encountered. This brought the exodus to a halt. But by 1727 Palantine Germans again decided to seek their fortunes in America. They arrived in large numbers until about the time of the Revolution. Almost all of them settled first in Pennsylvania and in the late 1700's many migrated down into the Shenandoah Valley area of Maryland and Virginia and into certain counties of North Carolina. Migration into Ohio and the midwest did not generally begin until about 1800. |
